Cooper wasn’t following Hinklee, or so he told himself. He’d run into town and happened to see her Jeep parked along the street—which, in his defense, wasn’t hard to do, since the audacious color stood out like a yellow beacon. No, he didn’t have to stop by the sawmill, but he wanted to see how things were going. He’d forgotten all about the man coming today, because if he would’ve remembered, he would’ve gotten in his truck and headed back to the ranch.

“Hello.” Cooper directed his greeting to both.

Hinklee’s brow rose in question, and there was a slight quiver in her smile, but he hoped there was a hint of gladness in her dark eyes. He’d woken up missing her, which he would admit to no one, and prayed she’d thought of him too.

“Cooper.” Hinklee met him in the middle of the room. “What’s up?” He noticed the slight rocking motion in her stance and the precarious cadence to her voice. Cooper considered the situation and didn’t know if she was nervous about the man or about his showing up. He thought that after yesterday and the way they’d cared for the calf together, they were past misunderstanding each other.

“I had to run into town and saw your Jeep.” He tucked his thumbs into his front pockets. “I thought I’d stop in and see how things were going.” Cooper smiled, and Hinklee sighed softly. He glanced over her shoulders at the tall man. “Sorry, I forgot you had company today.”

“No worries.” Hinklee turned to the man. “Cooper Wayne, meet James Marksman.”

Cooper stepped forward and offered his hand.

“Cooper’s family owns the Lone Horse Ranch, which is where I’m staying.”

“It’s a pleasure to meet you.” Mr. Marksman clasped Cooper’s hand, and they shook. The calculated look in the man’s eyes left Cooper feeling apprehensive. Cooper spent a lot of time around horses, and they seemed to have a sixth sense when it came to detecting emotions in a person. The edgy vibe Cooper got from this Mr. Marksman had him thinking Rose would be skittish and untrusting of the man. He hoped Hinklee would do the same thing. “I’d love to see your ranch while I’m in town.”

Cooper looked at Hinklee, who slightly shrugged. “Sure,” he said to Mr. Marksman. He didn’t know the guy, but he didn’t like him. There was something predatorial about the way Mr. Marksman watched Hinklee, and Cooper didn’t want him hanging around the ranch, but he knew how important this man’s money was to Hinklee. “Anytime.”

Hinklee gave him an appreciating smile, and her eyes lit up. Cooper shuddered inside at her reaction, because he knew he’d invite the devil himself to the ranch if it meant Hinklee would look at him like that. Man, was he in trouble.
